The problem

Hiring companies and managers either aren’t aware or well-informed about hiring solutions for international candidates, resulting in these candidates being excluded from consideration for most remote jobs. This isn’t inclusive practice, and could prevent industries from progressing, especially given the pandemic has permanently changed how the world works.

What I did

Having both noticed and experienced this problem, I offered to do the research and content design for a page for UX Content Collective's new jobs site to raise awareness and encourage the use of an employer of record in companies' hiring process. I chose the new jobs site because those visitors made up my target audience. My pitch to the CEO was accepted.

Possible considerations for hiring companies and managers

  • ‘Why should I care about this?’

  • ‘Isn’t this just basically a staffing-agency-type thing?’

  • ‘Is this even necessary? Can’t we just hire these candidates as contractors?’

  • ‘Is this legal? Does this put my company at risk in any way?’

  • ‘Is this expensive? How much does this cost?’

  • ‘Which companies offer these hiring solutions?’

  • ‘I’m all for using these solutions, but I’m just the hiring manager — I don’t have the authority to make decisions on stuff like this. So, what can I do?’

Goals

  • Use plain language to raise awareness of the simple international hiring solutions available to hiring companies and managers

  • Highlight the benefits of using them

  • Explain how these solutions work — including how they’re different to staffing agencies — and address possible questions and concerns

  • Convince hiring companies and managers to hire international candidates by using these solutions

  • Make content scannable and easy to understand by using clear headings and short, simple sentences and paragraphs

  • (Hopefully) Offer an incentive to encourage hiring companies and managers to use these solutions (discounts via partnerships?)

  • (Eventually) Provide testimonials from hiring managers and hired candidates who’ve used and benefited from these solutions as encouragement for others to use them too

Voice

  • Friendly, encouraging, and enthusiastic, without hype

  • Relaxed and simple over stiff or formal, but professional
