Posting and Crossposting
on Reddit

The brief

Using Reddit's style guidelines, complete two writing exercises within 48 hours. Reddit's Staff UX writer wanted to know...

  • how I think about user experience and designing products

  • how I use writing and UI copy to improve product experiences

  • how I articulate the reasons behind my decisions

Exercise 1: Choose your own adventure

Choose an experience on reddit.com or one of our mobile apps where the UX writing and content could be improved. Explain what you would change and why and rewrite the experience.

(I chose the Create a Post experience on the iPad app.)

Exercise 2: Crossposting on web

Overview

On Reddit, users post content to communities where their posts are relevant and on-topic. However, often a post can be relevant to multiple communities. (For example, a funny video of your dog might fit in r/WhatsWrongWithYourDog, r/Dogsbeingderps, and r/AnimalsBeingDerps). In that case, a user can use Reddit’s crosspost feature to share their post in multiple communities.

Ask from your Product Manager

The current web experience for posting and crossposting is outdated and we’re finding that users on the web crosspost 25% less than those on the native apps. Let’s see if a quick copy refresh can make it more clear for both current and new users how to crosspost and remove friction.

Deliverables

Review the Post in feed entrypoint, Create a crosspost page, and Choose a community dropdown screens and recommend copy changes to improve the experience. (You can submit your recommendations using the provided wireframes below the mocks as your template or create your own if that’s what you prefer.)

What I did

I completed the exercises before the deadline and included the reasoning behind my choices. See completed exercises.
